ITEM 1) GPS 2R-M1 ARRIVES AT CAPE
CANAVERAL
The following details are supplied by Keith D. McDonald,
Navtech's
Technical Director.
"The first GPS satellite in the new generation of satellites has
been shipped
from its factory at Lockheed-Martin, Valley Forge, and has
arrived at Cape
Canaveral. The Lockheed-Martin GPS 2R-M1 is slated for launch
May 20 from
Cape Canaveral, Florida.
The new satellite will have the designation GPS 2R-M. With the M
standing
for "Modernized", this is the first GPS satellite that will
carry a 2nd
civilian signal. This signal, the L2C signal ("C" for civilian)
is a
multiplexed signal in phase quadrature to the PY code signal in
L2 and will
enable the civilian community to have a 2nd signal in the clear.
This means
that civilians can start getting corrections for the ionosphere,
the largest
error component in the current civil GPS error budget.
FOC (full operational constellation of 18 satellites) for the
GPS 2R-M
series is now projected to occur in the timeframe of 2010-14.
One satellite
is sufficient for ionospheric correction, and a single satellite
is in view
about 40% of the time. We are not aware of any GPS receivers
capable of
processing the L2C for ionospheric correction at this time, but
will welcome
any information our readers might have on this topic. Surely the
capability is on the horizon (excuse the pun). Eventually, this
signal will
give a worldwide instantaneous correction improving the civil
accuracy to
about 1-3 meters. Currently North America is fairly well covered
with WAAS
signals that provide ionospheric corrections measured at a
number of sites
around the US to WAAS equipped users.
The signal is multiplexed to provide a signal with a data
message as well as
a companion signal without the data message, allowing long
integration times
of signal. This will make the signal more readily available for
indoor use
and certain other applications in the future.
