410A: GPS and GNSS
RFI & Jamming Concerns I

Register for this tutorial  ~  Back to main tutorials page

This half-day presents design techniques for GNSS RFI effects including highlights of GNSS spectrum management and an overview of GNSS RFI (including spoofing) followed by detailed GNSS RFI hardening design techniques.

Mr. Phil Ward
Navward GPS Consulting

Design for GNSS RFI Effects I
• Highlights of spectrum management
• Overview of RFI & spoofing
• Highlights of GNSS receiver design

Design for GNSS RFI Effects II
Detailed jamming strategies
• Wideband – BLWN, matched spectrum, spoofers, pulse, CW, two tone
CW, swept-tone (chirped), frequency hopping, DGNSS data link
Receiver RFI hardening design techniques
• Match dynamic range, multi-bit ADC, RFI situational awareness

Design for GNSS RFI Effects III
Receiver RFI hardening design techniques
• Mitigating wideband RFI – BLWN & matched spectrum, tracking
threshold techniques, antenna gain/null steering techniques
• Mitigating wideband RFI – Pulse, Non-linear front end, Front end
   blanking
• Mitigating narrowband RFI – CW and other types, Spectrum excision

Please Note: This session is designed to be taken in conjunction with 410B, which follows it, and may not stand alone comprehensively without that additional material.

Level: Assumes an understanding of RFI and jamming concerns, as well as a basic understanding of GPS receiver operation. Proceed to 410B.

410B: GPS and GNSS

RFI & Jamming Concerns II

Register for this tutorial  ~  Back to main tutorials page

This half-day builds on 410A and addresses the analytical techniques associated with the effects of RFI and jamming.

Mr. Ward

Analysis of RFI Effects I
• Unjammed GPS signal power
• Jamming effects
• Jamming-to-signal power ratio (J/S)

Analysis of RFI Effects II
GPS receiver tracking thresholds
• Unaided receivers: carrier tracking thresholds
• Externally aided receivers: code tracking thresholds

Analysis of RFI Effects III
• Receiver performance – J/S computation examples
• Tolerable performance – Tolerable J computation examples
• Analysis of RF interference signal levels, range to jammer

Appendix I: Analysis of built-in J/N meter design

Please Note: This session is designed to be taken in conjunction with 410A, which precedes it, and may not stand alone comprehensively without that additional material.

Level: Assumes an understanding of RFI and jamming concerns, like that provided by 410A, as well as a basic understanding of GPS receiver operation.
