VN-200 OEM GPS-Aided Inertial Navigation System (GPS/INS)

The VN-200 OEM (also known as the VN-200 SMD Inertial Navigation System) is a miniature, surface mount, high- performance GPS-Aided Inertial Navigation System (GPS/INS) the size of a postage stamp. Incorporating the latest MEMS sensor technology, the VN-200 OEM combines 3-axis accelerometers, gyros, magnetic sensors, a barometric pressure sensor, a high-sensitivity GPS receiver and advanced Kalman filtering algorithms to provide optimal estimates of position, velocity, and orientation. The VN-200 SMD requires only a single 3.2-5.5V power supply, and can be directly embedded into a user’s electronics. Interface with the VN-200 SMD is made easy by using either the serial 3V TTL (UART) or the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI).

VN-200 Surface Mount GPS/INS

The VN-200 surface mount (SMD) inertial navigation system from VectorNav Technologies was the first GPS-aided inertial navigation system on the market to offer calibrated, high-performance, industrial grade MEMS sensors, a GPS receiver and quality sensor fusion algorithms in a single surface mount package the size of a postage stamp. The VN-200 onboard microprocessor runs an aerospace-grade Kalman filter algorithm at an unparalleled rates of up to 2400 Hz and provides accuracies better than 0.125 deg RMS in pitch and roll and 0.375 deg RMS in heading and is robust to a wide range of static and dynamic operating conditions.

The OEM package is highly attractive for applications looking to deeply embed a full inertial navigation solution into the electronics design. Only a single 3.2 – 5.5 V power supply is required and communication with the VN-200 OEM is possible using either the serial 3 V TTL (UART) or the Serial Peripheral Interface (SPI). The system incorporates a high sensitivity, 50-channel GPS module receiver, and an U.FL connector is provided for connection to an external, active antenna.

The VN-200 OEM can be used in a wide variety of industrial and military applications and is well suited for size, weight, power and cost (SWAP-C) constrained applications such as UAVs and other unmanned vehicle systems, camera and platform stabilization, guided munitions, heavy machinery monitoring, robotics, primary or secondary flight navigation, flight simulation, and augmented / virtual reality platforms among others.

GPS / INS Kalman Filter Algorithms

The VN-200 incorporates the latest advancements in Aerospace grade Kalman filter inertial navigation algorithms specifically tailored to solve problems typically faced by industrial users. Industrial control applications require high accuracy low latency position, velocity, and attitude measurements. GPS provides long-term position accuracy, but is incapable of providing low-latency high bandwidth measurements. Inertial sensors provide high bandwidth acceleration and angular rates, but cannot provide long-term position and orientation accuracy due to drift and integration errors. Utilizing an onboard Extended Kalman Filter the VN-200 is capable of combining in an optimal manner the high bandwidth inertial measurements with the high accuracy low bandwidth GPS measurements. The VN-200 provides industrial users with access to a continuous stream of low latency high accuracy position velocity and attitude measurements at a rate of up to 200Hz.
